This assignment required all of Colin’s engineering and project management skills to make it successful.  It began in the UK with the development of a new product. Working with the designers a new moulding technique for W.Lucy (foamed moulding) was investigated and approved for the new product line to reduce costs and weight of moulding.  A set of twenty injection moulding tools and various copper bending jigs was commissioned for manufacture in China.  At the same time the injection moulding machines required for manufacture were specified and procured, including material mixing and drying equipment.  These included (at the suggestion of Colin) a robotic arm with bespoke grippers for part removal on each injection machine to enable fully automatic operation in the UK.  The whole production assembly line was set up and commissioned, with tool trials taking place on the new machines in the toolmakers workshop in China.  Once approved the whole line was dismantled for shipping back to the UK in five 40foot containers.

The line was re-commissioned with Chinese engineers and programmers in the UK in two weeks.  The new product has proved to be a great success with increased sales reduced manufacturing costs and greater margins.
